GreenGo Energy secures land lease for large-scale solar power project in collaboration with the Church of Sweden

GreenGo Energy Sweden is pleased to announce the signing of a significant land lease agreement with the Property Board of Skara Diocese, a vital step in our continued commitment to advancing renewable energy in Sweden. This partnership will enable the planning and development of a large-scale solar power park, marking an exciting opportunity for both GreenGo Energy and the Church of Sweden to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s green transition.

Jean-Christophe Girouard, COO of GreenGo Energy, expressed the company's enthusiasm about the collaboration: “We are thrilled to partner with the Church of Sweden and the Diocese of Skara to build a large-scale solar park. This collaboration reflects our shared vision and commitment to renewable energy and a sustainable future.”

This project represents a pivotal opportunity to contribute to Sweden's renewable energy goals while also supporting the Church of Sweden’s Climate Roadmap, which aims to reduce the organization’s internal climate impact and promote broader environmental stewardship. By leasing land to GreenGo Energy, the Church of Sweden is taking concrete steps to enhance renewable energy production, underscoring its commitment to sustainability.

“As a church, we want to be involved and take responsibility for enabling the expansion of renewable energy and thus reduce the deficit of energy production we have in this part of the country,” says Sture Kjell, chairman of the Property Committee, continuing ”the county currently produces about 1/3 of the electricity we use and this is a step, albeit small, to reduce that gap”.

“This initiative will contribute to cleaner energy production and underscores our ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions and support Sweden’s green transition. We hope this partnership with Skara Diocese lays the foundation for many successful projects with the Church of Sweden across the country, showcasing our strengths as a reliable partner from the inception of a project through to its full operation,” added Jean-Christophe Girouard.

The planning phase of the solar farm is still in its early stages, with further details to be shared in upcoming public consultations. GreenGo Energy is committed to transparency and collaboration with the local community as we move forward with this exciting project.

Sweden's green transition is gaining real momentum as the country intensifies efforts to combat climate change, driven by its ambitious goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2045. Central to this progress are renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, which are proving highly effective in reducing carbon emissions. The combination of strong economic predictability and short lead times for commissioning renewable projects makes solar and wind energy a sustainable solution for achieving – and even exceeding – Sweden's climate goals. GreenGo Energy is committed to long-term contributions through renewable energy and support services, helping strengthen the Swedish electricity supply while phasing out fossil fuels.

About the Clergy Salary Assets in Skara diocese:
The Church of Sweden manages forests and land all over Sweden. The thirteen dioceses are responsible for managing the assets through property boards or property committees, and the returns from the management are to be used for church activities.

Within Skara diocese, around 25,000 hectares of forest land are managed in-house and around 10,000 hectares of agricultural land are leased out. With a long history and a strong focus on active management for the future, the motto is to ‘utilize but not expend’ the priests' salary assets.
