GreenGo Energy expands operations in Mexico: A new era of renewable energy development
We are thrilled to announce the expansion of our operations in Mexico to full project development—from origination and engineering to full-scale construction of renewable energy parks. With ambitious plans to develop large-scale renewable energy projects, we aim to support Mexico’s national energy goals by delivering innovative solutions that help shape a sustainable future.
Mexico's renewable energy landscape
Mexico has set ambitious renewable energy targets as part of the General Law of Climate Change, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2050 compared to 2000 levels. The government has also committed to deploying more than 30 additional gigawatts of wind, solar, geothermal, and hydroelectric capacity by 2030, aiming for over 40 gigawatts of combined wind and solar energy. Projections indicate that electricity generation from renewable sources will reach 105.70 billion kWh in 2025, with an anticipated annual growth rate of 2.15% from 2025 to 2029.
GreenGo Energy's vision for Mexico
Mexico's abundant natural resources, including ample sunlight and favorable wind conditions, make it an ideal location for renewable energy development. The country’s commitment to clean energy infrastructure expansion presents significant opportunities for investment and innovation in the renewable energy sector.
Our primary focus will be on utility-scale solar, wind, and battery energy storage system (BESS) technologies, either as standalone or hybrid projects. Hybrid solutions, particularly those incorporating BESS, offer untapped potential for providing grid stability and ensuring a reliable energy supply.
“Mexico represents an exciting opportunity for GreenGo Energy. With our expertise in developing large-scale renewable energy projects across the globe and our innovative approach to hybrid solutions, we are well-positioned to contribute to the country’s energy transition. Our focus on solar, wind, and battery energy storage will not only support grid stability but also create long-term environmental and economic benefits.” - Jean-Christophe Girouard, Global COO of GreenGo Energy
Beyond energy generation, our projects are about environmental stewardship. Each renewable energy project we develop will play a vital role in reducing Mexico’s carbon footprint, offsetting thousands of tons of CO2 annually.
A strong foundation in Mexico
Our Mexican entity, GOGREEN ENERGY, began its journey in 2014 by capitalizing on the emerging commercial and industrial (C&I) solar sector. Over the years, we have successfully developed multiple projects through strategic partnerships. Today, our Mexico-based team has grown to 15 professionals with expertise across all aspects of project engineering - from preliminary design to IFC engineering. This team serves as the design, engineering, and technical powerhouse of GreenGo Energy worldwide.
To capitalize on new opportunities in Mexico's renewable energy sector, we have recently added an origination and development department. This expansion strengthens our ability to identify, develop, and execute high-quality renewable energy projects across the country.
“We are excited to deepen our presence in Mexico, leveraging our experienced team and strategic partnerships to drive renewable energy development. Our local expertise, combined with GreenGo Energy’s global capabilities, will allow us to deliver projects that make a real difference in supporting Mexico’s climate goals and energy needs.” - Ivan Hernandez, Senior Director GOGREEN ENERGY.
Navigating the regulatory landscape
Mexico’s renewable energy sector is undergoing significant changes under the current administration. The government has introduced an ambitious National Energy Plan that prioritizes strengthening the state-owned Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) while outlining guidelines for private sector participation.
Key aspects of the current policy include:
State dominance: CFE is designated to produce 54% of the nation’s electricity, maintaining a majority stake in energy generation.
Private sector participation: Private companies are permitted to generate up to 46% of Mexico’s electricity, focusing on renewable sources. This represents an opportunity to develop up to 9.6 gigawatts of renewable capacity by 2030, requiring an estimated $9 billion in private investment.
Public-private partnerships: The administration encourages collaborations where the state holds a minimum 54% stake, balancing public control with private sector innovation.
While Mexico's policy framework presents challenges, GreenGo Energy's deep local expertise, industry knowledge, and adaptive approach position us well to navigate this evolving landscape successfully.
“We recognize the complexities of Mexico’s regulatory landscape, but our experience in navigating diverse energy markets gives us the confidence to succeed. By working closely with local authorities, stakeholders, and partners, we will ensure that our projects align with national energy objectives while maximizing investment potential” Jean-Christophe Girouard shares.
A bright future ahead
With the Mexican government committed to achieving 45% clean energy production by 2030, the demand for reliable, renewable power is greater than ever. This presents significant opportunities for private sector involvement, particularly in utility-scale solar, wind, and BESS projects.
As we move forward, we are excited to collaborate with like-minded investment partners, landowners, and stakeholders to accelerate Mexico’s transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future. Our expertise, innovative approach, and commitment to delivering large-scale renewable energy solutions will help drive positive economic and environmental impact for years to come.
“At GreenGo Energy, we believe that collaboration is the key to achieving a sustainable energy future. By working together with local communities, governments, and investors, we can develop projects that not only provide clean energy but also create jobs, strengthen local economies, and drive long-term prosperity for Mexico.” Ivan Hernandez concludes.
